7 Things to Know About Blog Writing

effective blog writing

Blog writing may come naturally for some, but there is a complex mix of art and science at play. Even the most successful bloggers will always have more to learn. They will also have to create new ways to approach their craft as technologies and trends change rapidly over time.

So to sharpen your skills and increase your chances of writing a sizzlingly great post every time you write, follow these seven critical tips:

1. Do your research.
A “hot take” is a piece of journalism characterized by a knee-jerk reaction to a subject, often with little to no research performed beforehand. Don’t write hot takes! They may pull in readers if they are juicy enough, but they are never a substitute for an intelligent look at an issue from multiple angles and with a grounding in knowledge.

Look for quality sources from respected journalism outlets, especially trade publications that focus on your topic of choice. Avoid blogs that dwell on rumors, speculation and conspiracies that fail to conduct their own research. Remember that being respected will get you farther than being popular, because the first will always outlast the second.

2 . Choose your angle wisely.
The same subject can be tackled from an infinite number of angles, so make sure you choose the take on the story that will mean the most to your audience and aid the message you are communicating. Relating a topic to a deeper issue is always a smart choice, as is connecting a set of facts to a decision the reader has to make.

The difference between a good post and a bad post is often the approach the author chooses.

3. Bust Out the Thesaurus
Googling “___ synonym” can actually be an amazingly quick way to improve what you are trying to say. Take advantage of this thesaurus and ones like thesaurus.com that go deeper to avoid repeating the same words or phrases too frequently.

4. Get Rid of Bad Habits
Never start a sentence with “it” unless the subject is crystal clear
“This” should always be followed by a descriptive word, never left on its own
Learn
proper comma use
Be wary of homophones: then/than, their/there/they’re, site/sight, etc.

5. Don’t Bury the Lede

Tell your reader what they are going to read about within your first two sentences.

You may find yourself writing long-winded introductions before getting to the point. This approach is only a good idea if you later delete those paragraphs or move them to a spot where elaboration is more appropriate.

6. Proofread Your Posts!

You would be amazed how many silly mistakes you make when you are writing in the moment.

7. Keep Everything Short and Punchy
Big paragraphs are hard to read online, especially on mobile. Try to stick with only 2-3 sentences in a paragraph, and break up longer sentences. You can also often substitute wordy sections with bullet points or even a link to an article that
